Research Interests
Detection of climate change using historical satellite data; Role of polynyas and the Odden ice tongue in ocean convection and bottom water formation; Air-sea-ice interactions and biological processes in the polar regions; Development of satellite algorithms for polar parameters; Greening of the Arctic and other environmental changes.
Short Biography
Dr. Comiso has studied many polar processes and was among the first researchers to report dramatic changes in the Arctic sea ice cover. He has been a member of satellite sensor teams, including the EOS-Aqua AMSR-E team, and has developed algorithms for the retrieval of sea ice concentration, surface temperature, and clouds. He was the chief scientist in numerous NASA aircraft missions in the Arctic and Antarctic that included a flight over a nuclear submarine near the North Pole and has participated in multiple Antarctic field programs.
Dr. Comiso has received several NASA performance and group achievement awards and is the recipient of other outstanding achievement in science awards given by professional societies. He has authored or co-authored five books, several book chapters and more than 120 refereed journal articles. He is currently the coordinating lead author of the Cryosphere Chapter of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Working Group 1 report on the “Climate Change 2013: The Physical Science Basis.”
Dr. Comiso received his Masters of Science degree in physics from Florida State University and Ph. D. in physics from the University of California in Los Angeles. He held a post-doctoral position at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville before joining NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
Current Projects
Current research projects include:
- Development as a team member of enhanced sea ice concentration algorithm for JAXA's GCOM-W AMSR2, launched in May 2012.
- Research on the causes and impacts of the rapidly declining Arctic perennial ice cover.
- Study of plankton concentration distribution in the polar regions and its associated relationships with sea ice melt and ocean fronts.
- Study of cloud cover characteristics as observed by MODIS, CALIPSO and CloudSat.
