Modeling of ice sheet processes and dynamics, and their connections to the global climate.

Short Biography


Dr. Sophie Nowicki joined NASA Goddard in August 2009, with a research interest in ice flow modeling. Her work spans the spectrum of local processes, such as on understanding the physics of grounding lines, to large scale whole ice sheet models. She is a science team member for Operation IceBridge, is involved in SeaRISE (Sea-Level Response to Ice Sheet Evolution), and leads an effort to couple an ice sheet model to the two Goddard climate models (GEOS-5 and ModelE).

Sophie obtained a B.Sc in Geophysics in 2001 and a M.Sc with distinction in Remote Sensing and Image Processing in 2002, both from the University of Edinburgh, UK. Sophie was awarded a Ph.D. in Space and Climate Physics from University College London, UK, in 2007 for a thesis entitled 'Modelling the Transition Zone of Marine Ice Sheets'. Her thesis advisor was Duncan Wingham.
