Earth System Science is the study of the Earth as a complex machine. In order for a machine to function properly, each of
its individual parts must be understood and working correctly. Since the Earth is a dynamic system, its parts are constantly
changing, so we must arduously focus on the interaction of these parts and how the Earth works. Earth System science consists
of a myriad of spheres (parts) that interact with one another; hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and
the lithosphere.

The 2005 NASA Earth System Science Workshop has been designed to focus on each one of the Earth System Science spheres
through the presentations of world-renowned NASA Earth scientists who focus their research on the these individual spheres.
Each presentation will highlight a sphere and its interactions with the other Earth’s spheres. We will then tie all
these presentations together with some great educational activities that can be transferred into the classroom. This workshop
is for teachers of grades 9-12, but exceptions will be made for those teaching grades 5-8.
The workshop will be held at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Visitors Center on Friday
April 22, 2005 from 9:00am until 3:30pm. There are no fees associated with this workshop, but If you require overnight lodging, it will be at your expense. NASA is not
responsible for hotel/motel costs.
For any additional information, please contact Workshop Lead, Brian Campbell through email
