Hydrospheric and Biospheric Sciences Laboratory (614)

About Code 614

Hydrospheric and Biospheric Sciences Laboratory (614)

Acting Chief: Dorothy Zukor

The Laboratory provides administration, management of the Laboratory IT activities, leadership of Directorate-wide IT security, plus a growing education and outreach activity.

Cryospheric Sciences Branch (Code 614.1) | web site

Branch Head: Thorsten Markus

The mission of the Cryospheric Sciences Branch (CSB) is to increase our understanding of the Cryosphere and the processes influencing this environment on Earth and other planetary bodies in support of the NASA Sciences Directorate, NASA's Exploration Vision, the U.S. Global Change Research Program, and the needs of the United States. This is to be accomplished via the development of remote sensing technologies, field campaigns and novel analysis techniques. These technologies, observations, and data syntheses are used to assess the role of the cryosphere in global climate change, and for exploration of the solar system.

Ocean Sciences Branch (Code 614.2) | web site

Branch Head: David Adamec

Research within the Oceans Sciences Branch consists of a very strong ocean biology program that includes broad ocean color and ocean carbon cycle research, and a physical oceanography program that extends from ocean circulation-climate research to air-sea interaction.

Hydrological Sciences Branch (Code 614.3) | web site

Branch Head: Christa Peters-Lidard

The Hydrological Sciences Branch studies the Earth's hydrological cycle, with particular emphasis on land surface hydrological processes and their interaction with weather and climate. The Branch develops new remote sensing and modeling techniques to improve measurement of how the components of the hydrological cycle interact over their broad range of spatial and temporal scales. The Branch space mission involvement includes the land surface components of Aqua, leadership in the ESSP-3 Hydros Mission, and GRACE. Branch instrumentation and facilities include remote and in-situ capabilities for measuring soil moisture, plus extensive computation, data assimilation and modeling capabilities in support of land surface process research.

Biospheric Sciences Branch (Code 614.4) | web site

Branch Head: Jon Ranson

The Biospheric Sciences Branch studies terrestrial ecosystems and their interactions with the atmosphere using multiscale remote sensing, modeling, and advanced analytical techniques.

Terrestrial Information Systems Branch (Code 614.5) | web site

Branch Head: Edward Masuoka

The Terrestrial Information Systems Branch supports the requirements of GSFC research projects that advance our understanding of the atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere on a global scale through the production of stable, well calibrated and scientifically validated products from a series of earth observing satellites.
