Overview

David Adamec is head of the Ocean Sciences Branch at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and has worked as a physical oceanographer at NASA since October 1988. From 1991-1994, he managed NASA's Physical Oceanography Program at NASA Headquarters. He is a member of the science team for NASA’s ocean surface topography missions, studying the ocean’s general circulation, and has worked for NASA’s Carbon Cycling Program conducting studies of the spatial and temporal scales of dissolved CO2 in the surface ocean. He is currently leading research on the role of salinity in seasonal-to-interannual variability of the Pacific Ocean in support of NASA’s upcoming Aquarius satellite mission. In addition, he is involved with NASA’s Seasonal-to-Interannual prediction efforts for forecasting coupled atmosphere-ocean variability related to El Niño and La Niña. He served as a member of NASA's Space Architect Committee, a group that devised the agency's long range plans for developments in space.

Dr. Adamec attained a BS and MS degree in meteorology from the Florida State University, and a PhD in meteorology from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.

Dr. Adamec has appeared in hundreds of television interviews on all major networks discussing various topics relevant to NASA's earth science program. He has also served as the technical consultant for an ocean exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and a children's book on El Niño.

When not at work, David dabbles in acting, though after six years of professional training, and to no one's surprise, nobody is beating a path to his door. He has written a few screenplays, and though written for personal enjoyment, some have actually made it to later rounds of screenplay competitions. David also enjoys reading U.S. history for the period 1787 -1800.
