Ninth Annual WAIS Workshop
September 18-22, 2002
Algonkian Meeting Center in Sterling, VA

The 2002 WAIS Workshop (WAIS '02) will return to the Algonkian Meeting Center in peaceful and serene Algonkian Regional Park situated along the Potomac River in Sterling, Virginia. This continuing series of workshops is the primary means for exchanging information and ideas pertinent to WAIS. They bring together the unique multidisciplinary community of Antarctic scientists that are pursuing the WAIS goals of understanding how rapid global climate changes occur and how the potentially unstable West Antarctic ice sheet may affect future sea level. You are cordially invited to attend.

The agenda will include, oral talks and panel-led discussions of topics selected by the WAIS Working Group from the WAIS Science and Implementation Plan. There is a liberal amount of time for discussion and poster viewing-a characteristic that has made these workshops very effective in information exchange across disciplinary boundaries. More agenda details are provided below.

With the help of a modest supporting grant from NSF, there will be a few additional distinguished scientists in attendance who are not actively involved in WAIS research, but are central figures in related activities. Their presence will help us put WAIS into a global context and will help WAIS become better known throughout the broader scientific community.

ABOUT ALGONKIAN REGIONAL PARK MEETING CENTER

Situated on the 800-acre Algonkian Regional Park, the Meeting Center features meeting rooms with a stone fireplace, and large windows overlooking the golf course and riverside park. Away from ringing phones and other interruptions, Algonkian Meeting Center provides a quiet setting for productive meetings. The park also features 12 riverfront cottages, nature trails, boat launch ramp, playgrounds and picnic shelters and a championship, 18-hole, par-72 golf course. Located off of Route 7 in Sterling, Algonkian Regional Park is 15 miles from historic Leesburg and convenient to Tysons Corner and Dulles International Airport. These cottages are very popular and book quickly

AGENDA:

The agenda will be organized to alternate between oral presentations and posters. Oral presentations will be limited to contributions to the following topics.

  • Hello down there: How is the subglacial environment affecting West Antarctic ice dynamics ?

  • There goes the neighborhood: How are recent calving events and ice-shelf disintegrations related to the West Antarctic ice sheet's future?

  • At arm's length: Is a coherent picture emerging of grounded and floating ice behavior in the Amundsen Sea Embayment sector?

  • Invest a NICL: What are ice cores telling us about West Antarctica's past behavior and recent climate?

  • Road Trip: What contributions are USITASE results making to the WAIS goals of sea-level rise assessment and climate history?

These topics will be addressed the first two days of the workshop. Following each set of oral presentations, a panel will lead the audience in a discussion to probe more deeply our current understanding of the specific topic. This format has proven very effective in past workshops.

Poster presentations can be on any WAIS topic and will be the focus during the many extended breaks. Posters are viewable for the full course of the meeting.

Concluding the meeting, Saturday morning, will be a discussion of our progress toward, and understanding of, our dual goals. We will also hear from our distinguished guests and discuss how WAIS should proceed during this time. The workshop is scheduled to end by lunch on Saturday-early enough for most travelers to get home that evening.

Abstracts are due and registration closes July 31, 2002. This will give the organizers time to make cottage assignments and establish the agenda. Both will be viewable on-line at this web site along with the full text of each abstract. A printed copy of the abstracts will be distributed to each attendee at the workshop.

LODGING :

RIVERFRONT COTTAGE ACCOMMODATIONS: The cottages are located within Algonkian Regional Park and are walking distance to the meeting center. There are 12 cottages ranging in size from two to five bedrooms with space for 45 people. Most bedrooms have a double bed; some have two twin beds. All cottages have been reserved for this workshop beginning Wednesday evening. A 3-night stay will cost approximately $285 per person and includes continental breakfast and lunch each day. For persons wishing to stay Saturday night, the additional night will cost $45 (no Sunday breakfast). Cottage assignments and final cost will be determined after registration closes (July 31, 2002). Westover Consultants, Inc. will contact you in early August for full payment which will be due September 6, 2002. Check-in time is no earlier than 3:00 pm Wednesday (Sept. 18), and check-out is no later than 11am Saturday (or Sunday). Pre-registration will take place from 3:00 - 7:00 pm Wednesday inside the Conference Center at which time cottage keys will be available.
